NIMMA CAN DO

A biobased object grown from household organic waste together with citizens of Nijmegen

In collaboration with: Besiendershuis, LUX Nijmegen, Niske Verweij, Jacqueline Macke, Ellen Eggerdink & other enthusiastic citizens of Nijmegen

Photography and film: Mich Fesenmeier

This social project explores ways in which a circular society could become part of our everyday life. Household organic waste serves as a substrate for a fungus. Set to grow, this becomes a solid material that is biodegradable and can be used to build with.

Over the course of 3 months, a devoted group of citizens offered their time and energy to develop this object. They partook step by step in transforming the bio-waste that their households produce into an artwork. People were involved with all steps in the process, brainstorming the shape and growing it afterwards piece by piece.

This process is an application of Catinca’s HOW artistic research, in which she explores what it would be like if everybody could build with household organic waste. With NIMMA CAN DO, Catinca explores what biobased craft could mean in reshaping social customs when knowledge of biotechniques is shared publicly.
