HOW

Ongoing design-science study

Bio-brick grown from household organic waste.

Catinca Tilea has grown an object together with citizens of Nijmegen as a hands-on approach to this study. The result of this process, done as AiR at Besiendershuis Nijmegen is NIMMA CAN DO.

Another application of this study is HOW TO HOPE TO BE, a canopy placed on the site of BioArt Laboratories, Eindhoven. This is a social experiment in which visitors of the venue could spontaneously collaborate and grow the structure bio-block by bio-block.

What if household organic waste was commonly seen as a renewable resource instead of waste? What if it was valuable and we could benefit from it? And what would the world look like if biotechnology would be the craft of future communities?

HOW is an ongoing design-science collaboration and a renewable biomaterial. The biobased and biodegradable material is set as a social catalyst, something that people can involve with. The study looks at ways in which organic waste can be repurposed significantly with the help of communities. It also explores how different ways of working together as a humanity could rewire our vision and place within the natural world.
