But nevertheless, the Grote Rotterdamse Kunstkalender 2016 is launching today and we are proud that one of the new studio projects is featured in it. We’re talking about ‘Time and Time Again’, an installation for outdoors, in nature. Enjoy this sneak preview. We’ll keep you updated with the evolution of this project.

The previous news item kept this special edition design half secret, but you already knew it is a latest very-local development of ‘Rotterdam Told by People’. About 500 people received the Zwaanshals mirror-magnet special as a gift last weekend during the Swan Walk. For those who got one and for those who missed it, we offer you a story.

Richard (46 years old): “More and more I feel like an inhabitant of Rotterdam Noord; it’s such a nice neighbourhood. The ‘artist density’ is about the highest in the whole city. That’s kinda weird! Well, maybe not that weird, but very noticeable. There’s a lot of stuff going on here. Nice shops have opened up on Zwaanshals, mostly of young entrepreneurs. You can see that this neighborhood is different from the rest of the city, there’s also new things happening ‘on the streets’, like the Swan Market, the Noord Bruist Festival and the monthly market of Rotterdamse Oogst. However, I do get the impression that the people visiting these events don’t match the neighbourhood’s demographics.”

‘Zwaanshals Rotterdam Told by People’, a special edition design at Swan Walk 26 – 28 September

Let’s start with a story:Rob (55 years old): “The north of Rotterdam is becoming nicer and nicer. Over there the Swan Market was originated. And on Zwaanshals you’ve got all these nice new stores, kinda the shopping point of the area. It’s a nice ne…

Let’s start with a story:

Rob (55 years old): “The north of Rotterdam is becoming nicer and nicer. Over there the Swan Market was originated. And on Zwaanshals you’ve got all these nice new stores, kinda the shopping point of the area. It’s a nice neighborhood, lots of great things are happening there. And some pretty amazing shops, like this one that’s specialized in wool, named ‘Ja, Wol’. There’s also this whiskey specialty store. Oh, and at the waterside of the Zaagmolenkade, there’s this furniture store where we regularly buy vintage furniture, Contemporary Showroom. I used to be in the neighbourhood a lot because my physiotherapist was there, so on my way home I would always pass by the Moroccan fishmonger to pick up his amazing fish soup, or get some ice cream at Doppio’s. The area has really changed a lot; back then there were just all these little grocery stores and shops primarily aimed at the Turks and Moroccans living there. Nowadays the stuff is more aimed at, how should I call it, a more trendy audience.”

We promised not to tell too much about our Zwaanshals special edition design, and a promise is a promise! But just a few words around it: Swan Walk is a three-day event. At its second edition already, the Swan Walk introduces people to the local creative scene. And it’s a pretty developed scene, I can tell you that! For the tours from one creative entrepreneur to another, we designed a special edition item, only produced in a limited amount of copies that the visitors will get as a little surprise. Our item is Told by People. You probably guessed it by now, but we’re still not going to speak its name! Just because we’d love you to come and discover it yourself!

‘Looking for Paul’ by Wunderbaum debates art status in the contemporary Dutch context at the Fringe festival in Edinburgh

The theater play ‘Looking for Paul’ brings the common citizen in confrontation with the work of conceptual artist Paul McCarthy. The discourse focuses on the extent to which art, regardless to its forms of expression, is, or should be, present in public space. The purpose of making art and its message to the world are topics central to the discourse. Studio Catinca Tilea has the pleasure to do the production of this theater play in the period August – December 2014.

Present at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, ‘Looking for Paul’ is still playing in the Summerhall until the 24th of August. For those not able to watch in Edinburgh, ‘Looking for Paul’ is scheduled again from September; click here for this year’s program.

Sofa Bed Test, Mock-up N. 03 – sitting angles, 6th July

We took full advantage of the Open Day of de Fabriek by organizing a lounging workshop. What did we do? Together with architect Adam Scales we are working on designing a sofa bed set. We believe this set should make you forget your worries when you sit, therefore each inclination degree on the seat and backrest is crucial to us. On Sunday 6th July, during open day, we invited the visitors to sit on the Mock-up N. 03 and tell us what they thought. We were testing between 12:00 and 20:00. All the process is summarized in the video above. Thank you so much for sitting on our mocked-up couch everybody, without you we couldn’t have done it!

There is something very human in looking at science from an art perspective, and the other way around. The US based art-science magazine ‘SciArt in America’ dedicates their April issue to debating what it is to be human. Among many wonderful contributions from scientists and artists, the magazine discusses the book ‘Infinite Instances. Studies and Images of Time’ by Olga Ast. Published in 2011, the book extends on the multi-faceted definition of time, as seen by film makers, musicians, philosophers, scientists, designers, artists, and photographers. The book features materials from the 2009 ArcheTime Conference in New York. As a conceptual design contribution to both the ArchTime Conference and the ‘Infinite Instances’ book, MyTime gets a mention in the ‘From the Library’ rubric of the magazine’s April issue, on pages 42 and 43. The strong cross-disciplinary approach of both ‘SciArt in America’ and ‘Infinite Instances’, brings to light questions that human kind has always been trying to answer.

‘SciArt in America’ is a magazine entirely available to read online. The April issue extends on the evolutionary approach of science and art working together. As a new field of expertise and a fast growing branch, the art-science approach is debated by showing the benefits of increasing our emotional perception field seen from the side of arts, and our possibilities for borderless imagination into developing ideas, seen from the side of sciences. This makes the ‘SciArt in America’ articles a very captivating read for all those interested in the evolution of our knowledge based society in a post-industrial time.

Sit, curl up into a chair, lay down, sleep… What is a sitting object to us? When to we sit or lay down? How much time do we spend seated in one day? Do we sit to be social or escape sociality? What do we demand from a sitting object?

Together with Arch. Adam Scales, we are designing a sofa. And while asking ourselves the above mentioned questions plus many others more, we took the challenge to redo the upholstery of two Danish Design armchairs from the ‘50s. This exercise turned up to be very constructive. We marked with it one chapter of our research, namely how the technical build-up of an armchair influences lifestyle and duration of sitting. Our process continues.
